Achieving a high band score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the golden ticket to international higher education and immigration. However, many students get overwhelmed and focus on the wrong strategies. The test doesn't necessarily gauge your 'raw' intelligence—it deeply evaluates your command over English structures.
Here are 3 tested strategic framework changes that will propel your band scores from a 6.0 straight to an 8.0.
1. The 'Skim and Scan' Reading Technique
The biggest mistake students make in the Reading Module is attempting to read the text like a novel. You do not have the time. Learn to Skim for the main idea of a paragraph, and Scan for the specific keywords asked in the questions. You should locate the answer in the text before fully comprehending the surrounding sentences.
2. P.E.E. Framework for Writing Task 2
For the essay task, examiners are looking for high coherence. You must structure every body paragraph using the Point-Evidence-Explain (P.E.E) model. State your Point, give Evidence (a clear real-world example), and strictly Explain how that evidence directly answers the prompt. Cohesion brings maximum points!
3. Confidence and Expansion in Speaking
Never give one-word answers in the Speaking Module. If the examiner asks, 'Do you like reading?', do not say 'Yes, I do'. Say 'Yes, I find reading quite immersive, particularly historical fiction, as it allows me to...' – Expansion is key. Furthermore, if you make a grammatical error, do not panic and freeze. Simply correct yourself fluidly and continue. Examiners reward confidence and flow over robotic perfection.
